Homecoming

Tomorrow at our home church they are celebrating 90 years of continued service. We received an invitation to the Las Cruses Church of the Nazarene to attend their 75th year of service. We cannot attend sadly. We were their pastor in 1976-78 had some good times, made some good friends, in fact one of the children then is now an adult in our church here in Huntsville. How ironic! She was a sweet child and is the same now...sweet. Her mother had to raise 4 children by herself after going through a divorce. We spent  some time with her trying to help her through trials. She was a wonderful cook. When I had surgery she made honey the best steak dinner, which he tried to eat while I was oh so sick from the anesthesia...remember the nauseous feeling?
Oh well...homecoming...when I was a little girl living in Miami Florida, in a community called Uleta....a small place with a post office,  that is where we got our mail...POB 123, Uleta  Florida. No zip nothing fancy just a wonderful clean place to bring up children. There was  drug store where I got the best choclate soda...uhmm good, small grocery store called Badgers where we got  milk, bread  after we had walked there ,hardware store and our church. Uleta Church of the Nazarene. OH what good services we had. When homecoming came around, special speakers, alot of music and tons of good food....
I really can't remember what my mother would make but what ever it was it was good. Probably chicken and dumplings. After I married, honeys mother would make the same thing , hers would be gone in about 5 minutes. Her apple fried pies were the best. Vann, my son who passed away, watched his grandmother until he perfected her apple pies. I miss him and her. There are so many memories surrounding homecomings, I would make pies, cakes, roast with potatoes, carrots and probably green beans. Cooking for homecoming is difficult at times, having to get ready , make breakfast and make sure that something is cooked for the church dinner. I have pictures of our dinner on the ground at Phenix City, Alabama..remembering those days. We took that church when they were low in numbers, we loved the people, visited them and became their friend. The number rose, singing was wonderful, preaching was great and the attitude was tremendous. They are now a larger church , having moved to a larger church and doing really good. We are proud.
So tomorrow is homecoming. Our job prevents us from attending many Sundays, we shall see about tomorrow. God has been with us for which we are thankful." Count your many blessings, name them one be one...."
